Need for all to fight corruption -NCCE

Berekum, Oct 24, GNA – Mr Rowland Baba Lambon, the Deputy Berekum District Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has said the fight against corruption was not a task for the government alone but the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians.

He was addressing the opening of a-two-day workshop at Berekum aimed at sensitising the participants on the need for all to promote democracy and good governance in the country.

About 150 participants from the districts and other stakeholders are attending the workshop jointly organised by Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) and Berekum District Directorate of NCCE.

It is under the theme, “Fighting corruption – an agenda for democracy and good governance.” Mr Lambon said the issue of corruption had become so pervasive that there was no human endeavour that could pride itself of being zero tolerant for corruption. He attributed the high rate of corruption in most African countries to undemocratic practices and poor leadership style of some political leaders.

Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, mentioned the enlargement of the Internal Audit and Public Procurement Acts as well as the repeal of the criminal libel law by the government as a way forward in fighting corruption in the country. He urged Ghanaians to support the passing of the Whistle Blowers Bill to help promote the fight against corruption.

Mrs Linda Ofori-Kwafo, Programme Manager of GII, explained that similar workshops had been held in 19 other municipal and district Assemblies.
