National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team member Hamza Suhuyini has refuted claims made by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo that the ongoing proceedings to determine her possible removal from office are politically motivated.
Speaking on ‘The Big Issue’ on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 28, 2025, Suhuyini argued that the Chief Justice’s legal advisors were prioritizing political considerations over legal strategy.
“No doubt many of her legal counsellors are brilliant lawyers, but the only reason they make such mistakes is clearly about politics,” Suhuyini said. “They are not being driven at this stage by the law. This is because they have succeeded in convincing the woman that the process is political.”
Justice Torkonoo, during a press conference earlier in the week, described the proceedings as flawed and suggested they were being manipulated to achieve a predetermined outcome. Suhuyini, however, countered that the Chief Justice’s framing of the process as political had caused her legal team to overlook crucial legal strategies that could have bolstered her defense.
“They are missing the thorny legal issues they could have taken advantage of, and in the process, they are shutting the legal doors upon themselves,” Suhuyini remarked.
He further stressed that the NDC and former President John Dramani Mahama had no involvement in the process, asserting that the Chief Justice must take responsibility and engage in the constitutional procedure in good faith.
“It is Madam Torkonoo’s cross, and she must stand tall and face the committee. After they are done with their work, if she feels strongly about the outcome, that will be the time to take advantage of the power of judicial review,” Suhuyini concluded.
The proceedings, which have sparked widespread public and legal debate, remain a critical test of Ghana’s judicial independence and constitutional processes.
