Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the Akwatia by-election, delivering an important victory for the party in one of the year’s most competitive contests.
Official results released by the Electoral Commission show Baidoo polling 18,199 votes. His main challenger, Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) received 82. In total, 33,819 valid votes were recorded, with 303 ballots rejected.
The by-election became necessary following the passing of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year.
Campaigning ahead of the vote was highly charged, with both the NPP and NDC investing heavily in resources and manpower to win over the electorate. Voting took place at 119 polling stations across Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and closed at 5 p.m. Counting was conducted in the presence of security personnel, party agents, and independent observers.
Baidoo’s victory triggered widespread celebration among NDC supporters, who thronged the streets of Akwatia in jubilation.
Political watchers say the outcome carries weight, as Akwatia has long been a swing constituency, alternating its support between the NPP and NDC. The result is being viewed as a morale booster for the governing party as it looks ahead to the 2028 general elections.
With his win, Bernard Bediako Baidoo becomes the new Member of Parliament for Akwatia, promising to build on the legacy of his predecessor and champion the government’s development agenda in the area.
