NDC urges government to end agonies

Accra, June 5, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Monday called on the government to expedite action to resolve the grievances of striking junior doctors in order to end “agonies of the sick”.

The Party also called on doctors on strike to reconsider their decision in the interest of the suffering masses.

“The Party pleads with the country’s medical practitioners that they should not lose their time-honoured sense of compassion and sensitivity,” The NDC said in a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Fiifi Kwetey, Propaganda Secretary.

Junior doctors in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions have been on strike for more than a week now demanding the payment salary arrears, which they said covered the last five months. The NDC said the strike by the junior doctors was bringing untold hardships and horrid experiences to people visiting the hospitals with some innocent citizens dying.

“The NDC feels alarmed that the government’s lack of good faith and genuine commitment to the welfare of the ordinary people is causing such a major crisis that is affecting the lives of millions of the poor and disadvantaged people, especially our women and children all over Ghana”. The Party said it would continue to bring every pressure to bear until the government finally takes the plight of Ghanaian workers and citizens seriously.

It said the government’s inability to respond swiftly to the doctors’ demands showed insensitivity to the plight of Ghanaians.
