NDC U/E chairman blamed for delaying road project

Communities in Nankana East of the Upper East Region have blamed Alhaji Mumuni Bonaba, Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for delaying the execution of a road contract awarded to him last year November.

The Regional Chairman’s construction firm, Bonaba Construction Limited is constructing a road from the Azasi Primary School to Paul Amenga-Etego Memorial Primary School in Kandiga, whilst Nasona Nasona Construction Limited is working on the road from the Kandiga Junction to Azaasi Primary

The affected communities include Mirigu, Kandiga, Serigu, Mayoro, Nabango Natugnia, and Yua .

These were contained in a statement jointly signed by Mr. Atasige Roger, Chairman of the Mirigu Area Council, Mr. Adogsinab Moses, Chairman of the Serigu Area Council and Mrs. Lucy Aziabah, Chairperson of the Kandiga Area Council; and read on behalf of the group at a press conference at Kandiga by Mrs. Aziabah.

It commended Abuba of Nasona Construction Limited for working on the road from the Kandiga Junction to Azaasi Primary School according to the terms of the contract.

The statement however said the people expressed disappointment at Bonaba Construction Limited for delaying its contract.

It alleged that a third contractor, who was expected to work on the road from Amega-Etego Memorial JHS to Serigu has never shown up at the site.

The statement called on the Kassena Nankana West District Assembly to abrogate the contract of Alhaji Bonaba and re-award it to Abuba of the Nasona Construction Limited or another contractor who has the capacity and equipment to execute the project.

The statement appealed to the Feeder Roads Department of the Ghana Highways to rehabilitate bridges on the Sirigu Zorko road, which had become death traps and were hampering transportation of goods and services.

It said the road was awarded on contract by the Government under the Cocoa Board Project to facilitate movement of share nuts in the area.

Alhaji Bonaba in an interview with Ghana News Agency explained that funds for the execution of the contract were delayed, and said that his employers were at site working on the road.

He appealed to the communities to exercise restraint whilst as efforts were being made to complete the project. **
