NDC to draw more votes from Ashanti Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has projected to win more than 30 per cent of the total ballots that would be cast in this year’s General Election in Ashanti Region to brighten its chances of retaining power.

Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, NDC General-Secretary, said the Region had over the years remained crucial in determining the fortunes of the party in such elections.

“We have put the necessary measures in place in order to ensure that the NDC garner the needed votes because anytime the party gets 30 per cent, particularly in the Presidential Elections, we go on to win power”, he said.

Mr. Asiedu-Nketiah was briefing newsmen in Kumasi on Wednesday in connection with the Special Delegates’ Congress of the party scheduled for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The one-day Congress is designed to endorse President John Mahama as flagbearer of the party.

In all, about 5, 000 people are expected to attend the programme.

The General-Secretary said it was erroneous for some political analysts to describe Ashanti as the stronghold of the main opposition party, the NPP, saying as far as the NDC was concerned the Region was open to all.

“We are convinced that the Region is for us all, and that we have majority of the people who believe in the ideologies and principles of the party as they have confidence in the NDC.”

Mr. Asiedu-Nketiah urged the delegates to respect the rules and regulations of the Congress to foster its success, adding that, adequate security had been provided for the safety of participants.

The Congress is being held in the wake of the demise of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who passed on some weeks ago.
