NDC on road to constitutional reforms

Leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is on a nationwide tour gathering inputs for reforms on its constitution.

The party is scheduled to meet stakeholders in the Upper West Region on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 for an exercise that has taken leadership already around eight regions, www.tv3network.com has gathered.

Last year, Former President Jerry John Rawlings, who is also founder of the party, called for “urgent” reforms in order for the party to position itself in good stead ahead of the 2016 General Elections.

“I do not think the necessary reforms required in order to clean up the image of the party are being treated with the urgency they require,” Former President Rawlings lamented last year during the Deza Palm Festival.

He added: “If we do not act quickly in cleaning up the party, we will, as I have warned before, face a problem in 2016.”

But in an interview later on TV3, NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia disclosed that the party is going through a biometric exercise to register all its members in order to have a “credible” database.

Reforms will be carried out after that, Mr Asiedu Nketia noted.

He said the reforms will result in the creation of a Universal Membership Suffrage, which replaces the electoral college of the party.

The NDC is expected to go to congress later in the year to elect new executives based on the reformed constitution.
