NDC, NPP in violent clash

Tamale, Jan. 9, GNA – Two persons sustained multiple gun-shot wounds following a clash between a youth group of the ruling National Democratic Congress and opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), at Changli in Tamale on Thursday.

The victims, Mohammed Muftawu, 23 and Yusif Rashid, 26, both supporters of NDC are receiving treatment at a herbal centre at Jakarayile, a suburb of Tamale.

They were allegedly shot by Rashid Abdulai, 18, during the clash, which led to the destruction of property, including a motorcycle belonging to an NPP supporter.

Mr Ofosu Mensah Gyeabuor, Northern Regional Police Commander, who confirmed the clash, said the police were yet to ascertain the cause of the incident.

Police Superintendent Peter Baba, Northern Regional Crime Officer, said Abdulai who allegedly shot the victims was in police custody with nine others.

He said the suspects would be screened and those found culpable prosecuted gave the assurance that the police had taken adequate measures to avert any future clashes in the area. Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Security Task Force has summoned leadership of the two political parties to an emergency meeting to resolve the persistent clashes between them.

Muftawu, speaking to newsmen said 17 pellets had so far been removed from his body while the remaining two were yet to be removed. He said he felt numbness in his left leg and was responding to treatment, while the pellets in Rashid’s body are yet to be removed. The herbalist, Amadu Nnidoo, told GNA that the victims would be discharged within the next four days.
