The Minority side of the august House of Parliament, yesterday reduced the house to a funeral parlour as leading Members of Parliament put on funeral cloths, laid their hands on their head in deep mourning, and hummed funeral dirges.
Those at the forefront of the funeral celebration were Minority Leader, Alban Bagbin, front bencher, Asiedu Nketia, also called ?General Mosquito’, MP for Wenchi West, Hon. Ama Benyiwa Doe, MP for Gomoa West and Madam Comfort Owusu, MP for Mfantsiman East.
The women were clad in traditional mourning attires of red and black (Nkuntinku) and the men in black robes.
Hon. Asiedu Nketia as well as Hon. Joe Gidisu, MP for North Tongu and Hon. Kwakye Addo, MP for Afram Plains South was in black cloth.
Others were either in ”Agbada” mourning clothes or immaculate mourning suits as former Foreign affairs Minister and Independent MP for Anlo, Hon. Victor Gbeho, and Hon. Francis Osei-Sarfo, MP for Krachi.
According to Hon. Bagbin, the Minority Leader, his side chose to appear in mourning attire to sympathise with the suffering Ghanaian masses over what they called the ”killer-price hike” in petroleum products by the government.
He noted that whilst those of the Majority and the Speaker were in their flamboyant dresses to commemorate the occasion, the NDC felt differently because of the problems brought upon Ghanaians by the petroleum price increase.
This, however, attracted shouts of ”Shame, Shame”, from the Majority, with the Minority shouting ”Boho bio”, (Repeat that one).
Minority Leader Bagbin noted that though Ghana had gone HIPC, the anniversary had been celebrated with pomp and pageantry, characteristic of the Ghanaian.
