NDC member accuses VRA of sabotaging operations of VALCO

Mr Stephen Ashitey-Adjei, a leading member of the Tema East National Democratic Congress has alleged that, the Volta River Authority (VRA) is sabotaging the operations of Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO).

He said an information, he got indicated that the inability of VALCO to operate the second pot-line was due to VRA’s refusal to give extra power to the company, which he claimed amounts to “a demonstration of disrespect for Cabinet and the Presidency”.

Mr Ashitey-Adjei made the allegations in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

He said articles 76 and 77 of the 1992 Constitution stated that “Cabinet shall assist the President in the determination of general policy”, and in the last quarter of 2010, Cabinet took a decision for the VRA to supply power to VALCO which Management failed to do.

He alleged that the VRA Board Chairman and Management were adamant in respect to the decision.

Mr Ashitey-Adjei said, currently VALCO was operating one pot-line instead of three pot-lines.

He urged the government to conquer obstacles for VALCO to succeed, so as to enable unemployed graduates to gain employment.

When the Ghana News Agency contacted the Management of VRA for their side of the allegations, the information was not forthcoming.**
