The Deputy General-Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal has said the NDC is capable of winning this year’s election on its own.
Speaking in an interview with the ADM in Accra, Baba Jamal however said if and when it becomes necessary the major opposition party would form an alliance with other opposition parties to defeat the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said alliances cannot be overruled in politics since the Kufuor Administration came to power with the help of other opposition parties in the second round in 2000 to defeat the NDC.
“NDC will not merge with any political party, but we can form alliances. Alliances are formed all over the world, so if there is the need to form a coalition with other political parties to defeat this government we are prepared to do it with them,” he stressed.
The deputy general-secretary said the NDC is already in “fraternal talk with other opposition parties” and when the forming of an alliance becomes necessary “we would do so.”
Baba Jamal said since the media plays a critical role in ensuring free and fair elections they should be objective in their criticisms especially when dealing with the opposition parties.
“We have done our best to foster some relationship with them but there are some people who have made it an avowed position never to say anything good about NDC. But these are enemies of democracy,” Jamal said.
He said, “We wish that every paper and journalist would be allowed a fair ground to operate and we want to see that when we come to government.”
