The Managing Editor of the Searchlight newspaper, Ken Agyei Kuranchie, has expressed disappointment in the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, for abusing the memory of the late President.
A couple of days ago, the Accra Mayor informed the media and the entire nation of the Assembly’s decision to rename the national hockey pitch after the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
The facility, which was credited to Madam Theodosia Okoh’s name, was vehemently protested on air by the Mayor, who argued that the facility should be in honour of the late President.
The controversial renaming of the national facility ignited public discussions and resulted in President Mahama summoning Mr. Vanderpuije to the Flagstaff House and directing that the status quo should remain.
President Mahama also rendered an apology to Madam Theodosia, explaining the new development as a “sad mistake” and “over-zealousness” on the part of the Mayor.
Speaking on OmanFM’s “National Agenda” on Monday, Ken Kuranchie opined that the turn of events is simply meant to tarnish the reputation of the late President.
He, therefore, advised the ruling party to “stop playing with the memory of Professor Mills…It is not fair to the man. They used him to get to power. They used his death to campaign, and they are even abusing his memory in the name of politics. For me, it is simply not good enough.”
