NDC invades Nsawkaw

Nsawkaw (B/A), Jan. 1, GNA – Members of National Democratic Congress (NDC) have invaded Tain District, moving from house to house to solicit the electorate for votes for their Presidential Candidate, Professor John Evans Atta Mills in Friday’s Presidential Election Runoff.

When GNA visited some of the communities in the constituency NDC members and supporters could be seen clad in various party paraphernalia with some of them holding placards saying “We need a change”.

Busloads of NPP supporters and members were also seen with some of them waving the party flags and shouting “We are moving forward” as the hitherto quiet streets of Nsawkaw burst into a beehive of activity. The unprecedented presence of the Military and Police personnel as well as election observers and media personnel drew many of the residents into the streets to catch a glimpse.

The long convoys of vehicles, including sleek 4 x 4 cross-country vehicles parading through the town was another attraction, as both the aged and young watched in awe either from the road side or through their windows.

The Ghana News Agency, however, learnt from some residents that some of their neighbours had fled from their communities, ostensibly fearing that violence might erupt during or after the election.

The heavy presence of military and police personnel in the constituency particularly at Nsawkaw, Seikwa, Badu and other communities was rather intimidating.

ASP Freeman Tettey of the Police Public Relations Directorate allayed the fears of the people, saying; “our presence is to give adequate security for the people and to secure the electoral process”. All vehicles entering the constituency are thoroughly searched by armed military personnel to ensure that no dangerous weapons or intimidating materials are smuggled into the area.

When the GNA vehicle got to Tainso and was stopped at the check-point, a soldier coolly explained: “Master we are sorry for any inconvenience but we are searching all vehicles for the sake of peace and safety of all”.
