NDC elects parliamentary candidate for Akim Swedru Constituency

Akim Achiase (E/R), Sept. 27, GNA – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Birim South District on Friday endorsed Dr. Kwasi Akyem Appiah Kubi, a medical doctor at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, as the Parliamentary Candidate for the Akim Swedru Constituency at a delegates conference.

NDC delegates endorsed Dr. Kubi, 58, who did not encounter any opposition at the primaries, to contest and wrest the constituency parliamentary seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The Municipal Officer of the Electoral Commission (EC) therefore declared him unopposed, amidst drumming and dancing by the delegates and party members at the Akim Achiase Concert Hall in the Eastern Region. Introducing the medical doctor to the public, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, a one-time Minister of Communications during the NDC administrstion described the candidate as a dedicated party faithful. Dr. Spio-Garbrah, who represented Prof. John Atta Mills, the party’s flag bearer for the 2008 general elections, called on party followers to comport themselves during campaigns.

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not have anything to offer Ghanaians, adding that: “this is evidenced by the fact that it has woefully failed to honour its promises”. Dr. Spio-Garbrah blamed the hardship on Ghanaians on government officials’ luxurious lifestyle, and observed that; “they are selfish and continue to seek their own interests”.

Mr. Ofosu Ampofo, NDC National Organiser, stated that the NPP Government had not lived up to expectation, because it had brought about high cost of living and huge taxes. According to him, the government had lost focus and vision, hence the need for Ghanaians to vote the NPP out of power, adding; “we need a change”.

He asked them to examine their living conditions before they cast their vote in the upcoming general elections. In a welcoming address, Mr. Emmanuel Kwakye, Akim Swedru Constituency Chairman, called on those who have defected from other parties and the NDC party supporters to rally behind Dr. Kubi to win the parliamentary seat in the constituency, because the delegates had confidence in him. In attendance were national and regional constituency executives, party faithful and sympathisers of the NDC. The running mate and his entourage received a rousing welcome at Akim Oda when he was driven through the principal streets of the municipality.
