NDC criticizes NPP over statement on elections

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reacted to Mr. Dan Botwe, General-Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly saying that the “NPP plans to disrupt elections in polling stations where the party deems the Electoral Officer as trying to be mischievous”.

In a statement signed by Mr. Vincent Asiseh, NDC Press Secretary stressed that there are “inherent dangers in the NPP’s publicly declared intention to resort to anarchy if it does not have its way at next year’s general elections”. The statement said true democracy is dependent on the recognition of the supremacy of the Rule of Law by all parties competing for political power. “By opting for unconstitutional and illegal forms of behavior at the polling stations, the NPP is, therefore, threatening to subvert our nation’s young and still fragile democracy.”

The statement said to justify its attempts to visit anarchy on the people; the NPP has predicted that the NDC would engage in malpractice during the next elections, adding that it “is a lame excuse for planning to disrupt the elections”. The NDC said though the NPP has been making allegations of electoral malpractices against the NDC, it has consistently failed to prove these in the law courts. “Mr. Botwe would do well to tell the electorate how the NPP intends to define rigging at the next elections since his party’s idea of rigging seems totally at variance with that of the legal system.”

The NDC urged the NPP to respect the authority of the Electoral Commission, which has the constitutional mandate to regulate elections, adding that its claim that the Commission favors the NDC is baseless.
