Agona Swedru (C/R), March 24, GNA- Samuel Ninkyi deputy secretary of the Gomoa West constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was on Wednesday jailed six months by a Magistrate’s court at Agona Swedru for double registration.
Ninkyi, 28, is a teacher at Gomoa Abamkwaam near Gomoa Mozano in the Central Region.
He pleaded guilty and explained that he did that “under the influence of alcohol”.
The court ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to expunge the name of the accused person from the voters’ register. It also banned him from exercising his franchise in the December general elections.
Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Charles Bortse told the court presided over by Mr. Abdul Fatawu Yakubu, that the accused is a professional teacher at Gomoa Abamkwaam, his hometown. DSP Bortse said since the registration exercise began on March 16, the accused person tried to register at Gomoa Akyempim and Gomoa Mozano, even though the two areas do not fall under his polling station. The prosecution said on March 18, the accused first went to Gomoa Akyempim, where he registered with the name Kweku Afadi Akyen.
The prosecution said after that, the accused person came back and registered again with the name Samuel Nkye at Abamkwaam.
He said a registration agent of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who knew the accused person by the first name he registered with, suspected foul play and quickly ran to his hometown to verify whether he had registered.
The prosecution said when the NPP agent enquired at the registration centre he discovered that the accused person had registered with the name Samuel Nkye at his hometown.
DSP Bortse said the agent immediately informed the police and the accused was arrested and searched.
Police found two registration slips bearing different names on him, the prosecution said.
