The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared all 12 aspirants vying for the party’s parliamentary primary in the Tamale Central Constituency.
The primary election is set for September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.
Cleared Aspirants:
Former Government Officials:
Abdul Hanan Abdul Rahaman Gundadoo, former Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive
Alhaji Alhassan Nbalba, former NDC UK/Ireland Chapter Chairman
Academics:
Prof. Razak Abubakari, Senior Lecturer at Tamale Technical University
Prof. Seidu Alidu, former Head of the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana, Legon
Professionals:
Dr. Aliu Abdul Hamid, civil engineer
Dr. Rahman Abdul Rashid
Sadat Harun Alhassan, lawyer
Seidu Mohammed, Principal Research Assistant at the University for Development Studies (UDS)
Diplomats and Entrepreneurs:
Mariama Naama Salifu, diplomat
Alhassan Osman Gomda, entrepreneur
Women Aspirants:
Hajia Muliaka Sualisu
Hajia Shamima Yakubu, NDC Northern Regional Treasurer
NDC Deputy General Secretary, Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, expressed satisfaction with the caliber of aspirants, highlighting the presence of three women in the race for the first time.
She advised the aspirants to conduct their campaigns with restraint and decorum to avoid creating division within the party.
“Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, also urged supporters of the aspirants to desist from violent acts throughout the campaign period,” he emphasized the need for peaceful campaigns.
The primary election is part of the process to replace the late MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who passed away in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The by-election is scheduled for September 30, 2025. Notably, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate in the by-election.
