NDC cancels demonstration, asks Akufo-Addo to disband Invincible Forces

Opposition National Democratic Congress is demanding that President Akufo-Addo disbands the Invincible Forces, a vigilante group of the governing party.

The party has in the past accused the group of carrying out “barbaric” attacks on supporters of the NDC after the party lost the 2016 general elections.

President Akufo-Addo in his State of the Nation Address on Tuesday condemned the attacks and charged all to “ensure that this is the last time that such undignified act occurring during our period of transition”.

Though the NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia on Wednesday welcomed the president’s directive, he asked the president to move a step further to show his commitment.

“In this regard, we wish to request the president to disband and demobilise his illegal vigilante group, the Invincible Forces with immediate effect,” he said in a press statement.

Planned demonstration The youth wing of National Democratic Congress had planned to hit the streets on Friday to register their displeasure over government’s seemingly silence on the attacks on its members and supporters. But Asiedu Nketia said the demonstration has been put on hold because of the president’s assurance.

“On our part, we are calling off the planned demonstration of our Youth Wing against NPP violence scheduled for February 24, as a sign of good faith,” he said.

The party hitherto had “asked our members to employ the first law of nature, which is, self-defense: as the only way of fending off the fiendish attacks of the Nana Akufo-Addo’s Invisible Forces.”
