The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday briefed Journalists of the outcome of its recent meeting with Nigerian political parties, civil society groups, human rights activities and cross-section of the public.
“The Nigerian mission was to sensitise, inform and educate the media, public opinion leaders, civil society groups and the country’s leadership on the serious political, human rights and rule of law developments in Ghana,” Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, NDC Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, said.
Alhaji Mumuni, who was addressing a press conference in Accra, said the visit was borne out of the keen awareness that in contemporary times the two countries are serving as role models in the West Africa Sub-Region.
He said the visit was to stress the task of inculcating in countries in the Sub-Region and the African continent the new culture and tradition of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
“The NDC believes that the two countries should share information and experiences in order to better protect and manage the evolutionary process towards a more efficient and politically workable Sub-Region and Continent.
“It is the assessment of the NDC that these mutually shared intentions are currently challenged in Ghana and the party cares enough to inform Nigerians timorously so that we can together think about actions that can stem the tide of political and human rights deterioration in Ghana, Alhaji Mumuni said.
He said in spite of the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, the NDC “believes that in the context of the new era of political accountability, democracy and good governance, our colleagues in Nigeria have the right to comment and seek to influence developments in Ghana for our mutual interest.”
Alhaji Mumuni mentioned in particular, what he described as attempts by the Government to usurp the functions of the Electoral Commission (EC); the Auditor General’s efforts to discredit the EC; Quality Grain case and the general trend of attacking its political opponents.
