NDC Aspirant

Sunyani (B/A) Oct. 12, GNA – Mr. Stephen Asante, a 57 year-old Sunyani-based private legal practitioner with three other aspirants has filed his nomination to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary for the Berekum Constituency. He has gone through the vetting process at the constituency level and is awaiting the final clearance from the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

Lawyer Asante, an indigene of Senase, near Berekum, has been in the legal practice since 1986 after successfully completing the Ghana Law School that same year. He earlier obtained a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Honours Degree from the University of Ghana in 1984. Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sunyani, Mr Asante, who worked as a Certificate 91A’ Teacher from 1974 to 1980, and is now member of the Legal Committee of the NDC in Brong-Ahafo, said the time was ripe for him to offer himself at the service of his people.

The Parliamentary aspirant said he considered the socio-economic plight of the constituents as his major burden. He said the best way to be able to assist in changing the situation for the better was when given the opportunity to serve the people as Member of Parliament. Lawyer Asante was the Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) from 1994 to 2001. He held the same position in Greater Accra Region from 2001 to 2004.

He stated: 93That position gave me a broader and deeper appreciation of the suffering of the people because of the numerous human rights cases I handled. The aspirant explained most of human rights cases bordered on socio-economic injustice and as a lawyer with 25 years experience and a former teacher, he possessed the requisite experience and knowledge to serve the people with commitment, dedication and devotion to help transform their lives. Mr. Asante, a partner at Nkrabea Chambers in Sunyani and member of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has been the Vice President of the Association in Brong-Ahafo from 2006 to date. He expressed the hope that if given the nod by delegates at the party’s impending constituency primaries he would be able to recapture the Berekum seat for the NDC. 12 Oct. 11
