NDC accuses Kufuor of stampeding EC

The governing National Democratic Congress has condemned what it described as unnecessary attacks on Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, by groups within the NPP over his future at the Commission and electoral reforms, after the verdict of the Supreme Court in the presidential election petition.

The NDC in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says calls for the EC chairman to exit the Commission are unconstitutional.

The party also wants former President John Agyekum Kufuor to pull the breaks on NPP members demanding the exit of Dr. Afari-Gyan as Chair of the Electoral Commission.

“On the issue of electoral reforms, we note attempts by Ex-President Kufuor to stampede the Electoral Commission into ceding its powers to unauthorized bodies when stating that reforms of our electoral system should not be led by the Electoral Commission.

“Rather than join this unwholesome chorus, we urge President Kufuor to call to order persons within the NPP who have made Dr. Afari-Gyan the butt of insults and abuse.”

The NDC believes the NPP is adopting some tactics to twist the arm of President Mahama to take “unconstitutional moves” to replace Dr Afari-Gyan with a person of their choice.
