The Ningo-Prampram District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has observed the 2015 ‘Citizenship Week’ with sensitization programmes in some basic schools.
The week, which is celebrated annually, was observed under the theme, “A Disciplined Ghana”, with this year’s commemoration running from May 26th to June, 2.
Miss Gifty Agyeiwa Badu, the Ningo-Prampram District Director of NCCE, told the Ghana News Agency that, pupils from 30 schools in the district were expected to receive education on the topic from renowned resource persons.
Miss Badu said the week, which used to be celebrated as the annual constitution week, was rebranded in 2012 to be celebrated as citizenship week.
She noted that, the aim of the celebration was to inculcate democratic values in them.
The use of resource persons, she said, gave pupils the opportunity to interact with people who have excelled in their carriers to serve as role models and encourage them to take their studies serious.
She said this year, the NCCE would address social indiscipline by imbibing discipline, nationalism and patriotism in Ghanaians, especially in pupils.
On the first day of the weeklong celebration, officials of the NCCE, who were accompanied by Alhaji Sa-Rhack Nartey, the Ningo-Prampram District Chief Executive, Mrs Gifty Ofori-Ansah, Ningo-Prampram District Health Director and Mrs Stephanie Mosore, Ningo-Prampram District Educational Director, had interactions with pupils of six schools in the district.
The schools were Prampram Presby Basic School, Prampram DA JHS, Christ Vision International, New Ningo DA JHS Basic A, Prampram Anglican Primary School and Abia DA Primary.
Miss Badu reiterated the need for self-discipline for Ghana to develop, saying that, every citizen must strive to be self-disciplined since that was the foundation for success.
She said a good citizen is expected to uphold the national pledge and anthem, learn the history of the country, obey the laws of Ghana and respect the rights of others.
“Good citizens are also expected to dispose garbage properly, be punctual at all times, be truthful and honest in all activities, protect public property and respect the religion of others.”
