Koforidua, April 30, GNA-The Eastern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Eric Bortey, has appealed to the Fair Wages and Salary Commission to increase the salaries of the staff of the commission.
This, he said would enable the commission recruit competent, hardworking and capable people who could work hard to enable the commission to effectively fulfil its constitutional mandate. Mr. Bortey was speaking at the launch of the 10th Annual Constitution Week Celebration of the Commission at Koforidua on Friday with the Theme, “Enhancing constitutionalism through effective participation”.
He observed that, a constitution of a country is a document which sets the framework within which laws, regulations and rules are made to govern the private and public lives of its citizens. He said it was therefore imperative for the citizens to know its contents and participate fully in the processes involved in the governance of the country.
Mr. Bortey called on politicians not go into politics only for their own gains or wealth but also think about the welfare of the people in the country.
Mr. Dominic C. Hammond, the Acting Regional Director of Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in an address, observed that the 1992 constitution have good components that could serve as impetus to the growth and sustenance of democracy and good governance in the country.
He explained that the constitution did not entrench any national vision for political leaders to follow hence various governments continue to abandon projects and policies their predecessors started due to the differences in political ideologies. He called on the government to recognize the efforts of the NCCE, CHRAJ and the Information Service Department and invest more resources into them.
