NCA warns against registration of SIM cards of dead persons

Tamale, Oct. 20, GNA – Clients of mobile phone services have been warned against registering the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards of their dead relatives, because it is against the law. Mr Abed A. Bandim, Customer and Co-operate Affairs Manager of the National Communication Authority (NCA) gave the warning at a meeting with District Information Officers in the Northern Region, in Tamale on Tuesday.

The meeting which was held against the background of the poor registration exercise in the region was meant to educate the personnel on the basic facts and essentials needed for the SIM registrations exercise.

Mr Bandim explained that the rational for the SIM registration exercise is to check the activities of deviants whose conduct undermine social cohesion and national integration. He debunked public perception that the exercise was meant for taxation purposes.

Mr San Nasamu Asabigi, Deputy Regional Minister said the registration exercise was not meant to invade the privacy of individuals but rather to protect them. He urged the NCA to speed up the number portability of mobile phones so that customers could easily migrate from one service provider to another without loosing their original mobile phone numbers. 2
