Navy boats arrest canoes engaged in illegal fishing

Accra, Dec. 31, GNA – Ghana Navy boats arrested a number of canoes engaged in illegal fishing along the coastline between December 26 and 30, according to a statement issued in Accra on Friday by the Ghana Armed Forces. The statement signed by Lieutenant Commander M.A. Larbi for the Director of Public Relations said 18 canoes, which were using generator set= s and light bulbs while fishing contrary to the laws of the country, were arrested. The statement said six arrests were made along the Tema coast while 12 others were made along the western coast.

It said generator sets, light bulbs and other equipment that were seized were handed over to the Department of Fisheries. The Ghana Navy gave the assurance that it would intensify the routine patrols to arrest and deter recalcitrant fishermen from violating the laws.
