Navrongo Secondary wins 50th independent anniversary debate

Bolgatanga, Dec. 23, GNA- Navrongo Secondary School on Friday won the 50th independence anniversary debate organized by the Upper East Region for senior secondary schools with 28 points as against Bawku Secondary School with 27 points. Participating schools were drawn from the eight districts in the Upper East Region.

NAVASCO, speaking against the Motion that “Corporal punishment should be abolished from the statutory books” argued that corporal punishment ensures discipline in schools, homes, and said sparing the rod spoiled the child. They said Jesus Christ even had to whip moneylenders operating in a synagogue and that the crime wave in the Islamic countries were less due to corporal punishment.

Bawku Secondary School, speaking for the motion said it was barbaric to inflict pains on fellow human beings. They argued that democratic ways of counseling and dialogues were more humane to correct offenders instead of brutal force that only hardened the offenders. Mr. Anthony Asayuure, the Assistant Director of Education, commended the students for the enthusiasm displayed and urged all schools to form debating clubs to improve the standard of English.
