Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese gets new Bishop

Bolgatanga, April 5, GNA – Reverend Father Alfred Agyenta, a Lecturer at the St. Victor’s Major Seminary and the St. Augustine Millennium Seminary in Tamale has been appointed Bishop elect for the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga.

Pope Benedict XVI, after a diligent search and reflection, chose and appointed Father Agyenta to succeed the late Most Reverend Lucas Abadamloora who died on 23rd December 2009. This was announced in Bolgatanga on Tuesday by Rev. Fr. Cosmos Ambrosini, Secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Leon B. Kalenga, in the presence of Most Rev. Philip Naameh, Archbishop of Tamale Diocese.

Rev. Fr. Agyenta, 52 years old, was born at Wiaga, in the Upper East Region and ordained priest in August 1988. He was appointed curate to the Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Cathedral, Navrongo, from 1988 to 1991 after which he studied further and later lectured at the St. Victor’s Major Seminary in Tamale. He obtained his doctorate in 2006 and has since taught at the two seminaries.

His appointment has come as welcome news to members of the Diocese who were eager to have a new bishop.
