National Service Scheme holds dinner for personnel

Tema, Aug. 04, GNA – Mr Samuel Ayim-Ankomah, Tema Metro Co-ordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS), has said it was important to encourage the spirit of volunteerism among the youth.

By so doing, he said, the youth would undertake projects designed to combat hunger, illiteracy, diseases and reduce unemployment. Mr Ayim-Ankomah said this at an end-of-service year dinner organized for personnel in the Tema Metropolis at the weekend.

The dinner climaxed activities marking the National Service Week under the theme: “Rekindling the Spirit of Volunteerism in Ghana, the Role of National Service Scheme”.

He said the NSS had added “Volunteer Service” to its core business to mobilize post national service persons and active pensioners to deploy them to areas where their services would be needed.

Mr Edmund Ekow Tuyee, Tema Metro President of the NSS, said the executives of the 2008/09 National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) would undertake a long-term project to improve the conditions of personnel by providing them with accommodation.

He said a hostel fund would soon be set up into which subsequent Year Associations would contribute 10 per cent of their annual total income.

“I believe in the next five years a lump sum of money can be raised to finance this very important project to solve one of the key problems facing personnel of the scheme.”

He appealed to service personnel to be selfless and patriotic and offer society what they had acquired in school. 04 Aug 09
