National Service Scheme begins nationwide workshops

Ho, Feb 08, GNA – The National Service Secretariat has begun nationwide workshops on human relations and customer skills for its co-ordinators to equip them to assist service personnel to adjust to their new environments especially rural areas.

Mr Abeeku Dickson, the Deputy Director of the National Service Scheme, said this at Ho on Tuesday where a two-week training workshop for co-ordinators of the scheme in the Volta Region is underway as part of the programme.

He said reluctance by some personnel to go on postings to rural areas was out of fear and inability to adjust to the cultural shocks of their new environments.

Mr Abeeku said it was unfortunate that the scheme was characterised by indiscipline to the extent that service personnel reject postings to rural areas and considered rural postings as punishment. He said this was because they do not understand the meaning of national service, whose prime objective was to facilitate national integration and help reduce poverty.

Mr Abeeku called on prospective personnel to consider postings to rural areas as opportunities for knowing other parts of the country and their cultures.
