National Service personnel urged to accept rural postings

Fian (U/W), Oct. 26, GNA – Mr. Abu Kansangbata, the Nadowli District Chief Executive, has appealed to National Service personnel to emulate American Peace Corps volunteers serving in the country by accepting postings to rural areas to help develop deprived communities. Speaking at a send-off ceremony organised by the chief and people of Fian in the Nadowli District for Miss Erin Milner, a Peace Corps volunteer in the community, he commended the volunteer for her unforgettable support for the community.

He said her efforts in the procurement of a shea butter processing machine and establishment of a cooperative credit union in the community were very remarkable developmental initiatives that could help alleviate poverty, especially among women, if put to good use. Mr. Kansangbata said the government was committed to early completion of projects in the community and said the community would soon be connected to the national grid. He said in collaboration with Mr. Mathias Puozaa, the Member of Parliament for the area, he would provide 70 dual desks to the basic school in the community.

Naa Bambio, Chief of Fian, praised Miss Milner for her services to his people and urged her to try and orientate whoever would be coming to take over from her to continue developing the good facilities she left behind. Miss Milner said apart from her job at the clinic, she realized that a very effective cooperative credit union and a shea butter processing machine could support the women groups to venture into small businesses to supplement their incomes. Mr. James Konogini, a Senior Agricultural Officer, told the people that government was ready to support them to undertake irrigation farming as well as rearing of animals.
