National Road Safety Commission launches Mini Billboards

The National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in collaboration with the National Lottery Authority (NLA) on Thursday launched mini billboards to create road safety awareness.

The Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union ( GPRTU), Tema station branch, Mr. Robert Sabah, said the mini billboards would be put at vantage places to caution road users to curtail road accident.

Regional Chairman of the NRSC, Mr. Daniel Wacko, said road safety awareness was a shared responsibility, adding “It is imperative for every Ghanaian to keep the road as safe as possible, it’s not only drivers who have that responsibility but pedestrians too.”

He said, about 13,000 accidents were recorded in 2014 with 29988 injuries and out of that 60% were pedestrians. .

Chief Superintendent of Police Fosu Ackah, a representative of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said most accidents occurred due to fatigue and appealed to drivers to take some rest when they are tired.

He advised pedestrians to always use foot bridges and drivers to respect zebra crossings.

“Due to the load shedding most of the traffic lights do not work, so drivers should make sure they watch traffic lights carefully when there are driving,” he added.

Mr Tetteh Martey of the Drivers and Vehicular Licensing Authority (DVLA) said drivers should ensure their vehicles are in a good shape before they start their daily duties.

He advised pedestrians to wear reflective dresses in the night if possible to help the drivers to notice them.

Madam Gladys Lartey, a representative of the NLA, said the NLA deemed it a privilege to team up with the NRSC to launch a campaign to educate the public and appealed to the public to adhere to road safety measures so to have an accident free Ghana.

A drama was performed by the Adesa Drama Group to educate the general public.
