National president of CSA calls for a halt to demos

Kumasi, April 24, GNA – Alhaji Ziblim Yakubu, National President of the Civil Servants Association (CSA), on Monday appealed to its members to put a hold on other planned demonstrations in view of agreements reached with the government last Friday.

A statement issued in Kumasi said the meeting agreed that a committee representing the government and the CSA be put in place to work out modalities for enhancing the salaries of civil servants where magnetization will only be one of such modalities.

The committee, he said, should complete its work by July 10. It said the meeting agreed that the review of allowances long over due should be finished before May 10 so that they could take effect from June 01.

The statement said both parties should work assiduously towards concluding the on-going negotiations for 2006 salaries before May 10. It said in view of these agreements, civil servants should return to work while their executive proceeded with the negotiations and expressed gratitude to all civil servants especially those who took to the streets in pursuit of their just demands.

The association appealed to the government to respect the tenets of the agreement in order not to compel the executive into taking a more militant stance.

The release said Mr Joseph Kofi Addah, Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, Minister of Public Sector Reform, Professor George Gyan-Baffour, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and Dr C.Y. Brempong-Yeboah; both Deputy Ministers of Manpower, Youth and Employment represented the government at the meeting.

The National Executive Committee and executives from the 10 regional branches represented the CSA.
