Akwatia, Aug. 18, GNA – The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday went on a peaceful walk through the principal streets of Akwatia to help calm down the political tension mounting in the area as a result of the parliamentary re-run election taking place.

The event saw Dr Kwabena Adjei, National Chairman of the NDC and Mr Peter Mac-Manu, the National Chairman of the NPP, walking hand-in hand to visit all the six polling stations where the parliamentary election is being re-run.

Other members of the group included the National Secretary of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Mr Yaw Djan, Deputy National Organizer and Mr Anthony Gyampoh, Eastern Regional Secretary, both of the NDC, Mr Ambrose Derry, Deputy Minority leader and Members of Parliament (MPS) from both sides.

At the various polling stations, both Dr Adjei and Mr Mac Manu appealed to their supporters to let peace prevail.

They said both parties were committed to peaceful democratic development of the country and there was therefore no need for their supporters to be at each other’s throat.

They urged their supporters to come out in their numbers to vote without fear adding that there was no need for them to harass or intimidate each other.

At the Yoruba Mosque “A” polling station, an official of the Electoral Commission (EC), who spoke to the GNA on condition of anonymity said over 20 people who attempted to vote with fictitious ID cards were turned away.

He explained that those offenders were not handed over to the police to help protect the peace.
