The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has launched the Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR) project.
The project is to help in the quest to establish a single registry database of the poorest and most vulnerable households in the Ghana.
The registry is expected to identify and profile poor and vulnerable households in Ghana such that the data would be used by all social protection programmes in Ghana to select beneficiaries for their programmes.
The project would also eliminate duplication of efforts and costs in social interventions, enhance the coordination of interventions across the ministries, departments and agencies and rationalise the implementation of the hitherto fragmented social protection sector.
Speaking during the opening of a three-day workshop in Wa, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, commended the Ministry for making efforts to address some of the complex human development challenges facing Ghana.
The MoGCSP organised the forum to train regional and district Social Protection Committees in the region.
Alhaji Sulemana expressed the hope that key stakeholders would give the current intervention the needed attention and not allow it to stall, as had been the case with several projects in the past especially the poverty mapping programme.
He said the District and Community Social Protection Committees have a crucial role to play in fostering understanding in their communities about the role, rationale and benefits of the GNHR in their communities.
He commended the MoGCSP for deciding to launch the project in the region, which has the highest poverty indicators in the country.
Mr Amoo Himbson, Chief Director at MoGCSP, said currently, there are about 144 social intervention programmes in place and yet many are still within the poverty gap hence the need for the GNHR Project.
