National House Of Chiefs To Elect New President On Tuesday

The National House of Chiefs will meet next Tuesday in Kumasi to elect a new President and Vice President. The terms of the current holders of the two positions have expired. The main contenders for the position of President are Odeneho Gyapong Ababio, Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso; Barima Kwame Nkyi, Omanhene of Assin Apimanim and Naa Professor John Nabilla, the Wulugu Naba. Nii Tetteh Out, the Sempe Mantse and Naa Banamini Sandu, Kaleo Na are vying for the Vice Presidency.

Article 271 and 272 of the constitution states that there shall be a National House of Chiefs whose members shall be elected from the various regional Houses of Chiefs.

The National House of Chief s shall advise on matters relating to chieftaincy and undertake progressive study, interpretation and codification of customary law with the view to evolving a unified system of rules of customary law. It shall also undertake an evaluation of traditional customs and usages with the view to eliminating those customs and usages that are outmoded and socially harmful, among other functions.
