Nanumba South Assembly pays premium for “witches”

Kukuo (N/R), May 25, GNA – The Nanumba South District Assembly has spent over Gc2,551 to enrol and pay the premiums for 168 inmates and their dependants at the Kukuo witches camp unto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The payment of the premiums which would be renewed next year. There are 130 alleged witches at the camp.

Alhaji Seidu Amidu, the Nanumba South District Chief Executive, said this when the assembly presented 60 bags of maize valued at over GHc 4,280.00 to the inmates at Kukuo on Tuesday. He said as part of efforts to further improve upon the standard of living of the alleged witches and the Kukuo community in general, the Assembly had constructed a CHIPS compound to cater for their health needs, provided residential accommodation for the health staff working there and additionally provided a borehole. He said a three-unit classroom block had also been awarded on contract for the construction of the District Assembly primary school in the community.

Alhaji Amidu said 65 poor households in the Kukuo community had been registered to benefit from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty. Mr Musah Tanimu, Assembymember of Kukuo, appealed to family members of the so-called witches not to neglect them but continue to seek their welfare and also provide for their upkeep.

Madam Abukari Maraima Nkpansuu, Queen mother of the witches’ camp commended the district assembly for its assistance and appealed for help to find a lasting solution to the water problem facing the community.
