Nana Addo is ever ready to legalize homosexuality – Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s answer to Ghana’s position on homosexuality has opened the doors for gay rights activists to agitate for the decriminalization of the act.

According to the outspoken NDC aficionado, the President’s response is an indication that he would soon endorse the practice.

“I think Nana Addo is ever ready to legalize homosexuality. Per his response, he has actually opened doors for gays to demonstrate for the decriminalization of the act. It’s just unfortunate for a whole President to give such response” he said on Accra based Okay fm.

In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated that even though legalizing homosexuality is not on his government’s agenda, a strong call by members of the society through agitation can cause the law banning it be amended.

Following the president’s comment which has generated a lot of controversies, the general public and some state actors have heavily criticized him, saying that his stance will encourage homosexuals in Ghana to gain grounds to protest.

Mr. Nketia believes like the late president John Evans Atta Mills, the president must be clear on his stance because as far as he is concerned the country will not accept homosexuality.

“Late President Mills was quick to give his stance as well as other former Presidents so it will be appropriate for him (Nana Addo) to also come out clear on the issue” he said.

He noted that it is a general conception that the Ghanaian society abhors homosexuality, and therefore the President is expected to recognize that fact and act in accordance.
