NALAG holds delegates conference

Amasaman (GA), Aug. 25, GNA – Mr. Solomon Offei Darko, Municipal Chief Executive of AMA at the weekend said that there is a widespread acceptance that strong and efficient structure at the decentralisation programme that was embarked upon fifteen years ago has made progress in the promotion of an efficient local governance system in the country.

Addressing the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) Regional Delegates Conference on behalf of the Regional Minister I.C. Quaye at Amasaman at the election of regional representatives of NALAG.

He stressed that the need to advance the process further is through the policy of decentralisation that Ghana has succeeded in promoting participation of large number of people in decision-making at all level of governance, especially at the grassroots.

Mr Darko said the programme has further spurred people’s interest in democracy, human rights and good governance.

He said the challenge, therefore, is for all stakeholders in the process, particularly NALAG to redouble their efforts to energise and give impetus to the institutions of the local governance to take their proper places in the system to enhance effectiveness.

He expressed concern about the low patronage of the electorate at the unit committee level as exhibited in the last September 2002 election. The president of NALAG, Mr. Akwasi Asare Ankomah congratulated the 15-member newly elected executive headed by MR. Ben Annaabo, presiding member of AMA.
