The President of the National Association for Graduate Teachers, NAGRAT, Mr. Kwami Alorvi, has warned that if Ghana Education Service, GES, and Ministry of Finance did not come out with allowances for teachers and heads of schools, by 31st of August this year, NAGRAT will take an industrial action.
He said the Director-General of GES has promised to discuss with the officials of WAEC their proposed allowances based on the duration of the paper” but if the promise is broken, NAGRAT will boycott this year’s SSCE examination.
Mr. Alorvi said these at a press conference in Accra. He said what happened during the past 49 days was only a signal of the danger coming. He said “the issuance of letters of promotion and conversion to graduate principal superintendents and senior superintendents, adjustment of salaries of graduate assistant directors, responsibility allowances paid to teachers and heads of schools, allowances paid to supervisor and invigilators of SSCE examination and unauthorized deductions of dues and levies from their salaries by the Controller and Accountant General Department” has become a worry to NAGRAT over the years.
He said the Deputy Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Mr. Joe Donkor, has come out with some settlement on the deduction of the dues to re-find the deduction to the teachers.
Mr. Alorvia added that the examinations conducted by some schools without the supervisions of NAGRAT must be cancelled and re-written. He said “such examinations must be set aside and new ones conducted under the professional supervision.
Mr. Alorvia urged the authorities to hear their plea and come to the aid of NAGRAT.
He also appealed to members to get back to duty and organise examinations boycotted last term and cover the topics not treated.
