Apam (C/R), Sept. 16, GNA – The Geological Survey Department in conjunction with Gomoa District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has held a workshop at Apam to sensitise the participants on the effects and management of earthquakes. Chiefs, heads of departments, disaster volunteer groups, Assembly Members, Town/Area Councils and dressmakers participated in the programme.
Mr Sylvanus Ahulu, Geological Survey Engineer, took them through the causes of earthquakes, its prevention and management. He said the most effective way of managing the effects of the disaster was through proper planning and urged Ghanaians to ensure that their buildings were well planned against disasters such as earthquakes and floods.
Mr D.K. Andorful, Gomoa District NADMO Co-ordinator, urged people who wanted to put up houses especially in earthquake prone areas, to consult engineers to know the compactness of the land. They should also consult architects for advice on materials to mitigate the effects of earthquakes. Mr William Adjei Benni, Central Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, called on the participants to share the knowledge they had acquired with those who did not attend the workshop.
