Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Portuphy, has cautioned citizens residing in low-lying and storm prone areas in parts of the country to ‘take cover’ as the rains set in this year.
“We are entering the raining season, again and we know that the rainstorm has started, we are cautioning citizens to careful about the rainstorm that appears to be faster and more powerful in this early period,” Mr. Portuphy stated when he presented over 300 bundles of roofing sheets to the Volta regional minister, Helen Ntoso for onward distribution to affected communities of the recent rainstorm in the region.
According to the NADMO boss, about 10,600 persons were affected by flash floods in 12 districts of the region last year, with 77percent of the victims being women and children.
Just a fortnight ago, rainstorm swept through some communities in the Ho, Ketu-North and South Tongu districts, causing massive destruction to homes and schools.
About 92 houses and two schools had their roofs blown off in Agbakorpe and Agbagorme, rendering about 626 people homeless and also distracted learning activities in the area.
The regional minister, Helen Ntosu on her part commended NADMO for the assistance and said priority will be given to the affected schools, in order to enable the resumption of teaching and learning in the schools.
