Gloria Akpene Nyarku, widely known as MzGee, has opened up about the emotional challenges she endured after taking over as host of United Showbiz, a role previously held by beloved actress Nana Ama McBrown.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the media personality revealed the toll that public scrutiny and internal industry backlash took on her mental and emotional well-being. Reflecting on the period following her appointment, MzGee described it as an “emotional rollercoaster” marked by gossip and harsh criticism from her own colleagues in the media space.
“It was an emotional rollercoaster. I had to endure gossip and unfair criticism from people within the same industry,” she shared.
Despite the turbulence, MzGee found comfort in an unexpected source—support from leading women in Ghanaian media. She singled out Nana Aba Anamoah, Delay, and Gifty Anti for reaching out to uplift her when the weight of the criticism felt overwhelming.
“These women lifted me when I was down. They called me, comforted me, and reminded me of my worth,” she noted.
While hosting United Showbiz, MzGee recalled an incident involving a call to Bryt TV presenter Afia Achiaa Rakia during a segment that featured Kumawood actor Big Akwes. What was intended as a light-hearted game quickly drew criticism, sparking fresh debates on the ethics of entertainment journalism.
Now host of Just Being Us on Akwaaba Magic, MzGee is using her platform to empower the next generation. In a ten-minute video shared on her Instagram, she pledged her support to a young female journalist recently targeted by online attacks, calling for greater unity among women in the media.
Her message of resilience and sisterhood has since resonated across social platforms, sparking renewed conversations about mental health, mentorship, and the need for compassion in Ghana’s competitive media industry.
