Museums promote sustainable development

Museums are no longer places where ancient remains are kept but an institution for discovery and promotion of sustainable development, Mr. Alex K. Okpei, Volta Regional Director of the Museums and Monuments Board has said.

He was speaking at the regional celebration of International Museums Day in Ho on Friday.

It was on the theme, “Museums in a Changing World. New Challenges, New Inspirations.”

Mr. Okpei said as the world changed with new technologies, museums across the world were better placed for people to study the past and look into the future.

He explained that the future could only be built on the past and urged policy makers to promote the work of the Board for sustainable development.

“Our work inspires people and as they are inspired, they find new ways of doing things in a sustainable way that bring development, “Mr Okpei said.

He therefore urged pupils, students and the public to visit the museums regularly for inspirations.

At a brief symposium, officials from the Association for Sustainable Rural Development (ASRUD), demonstrated new ways in which cassava could be used.

Home Economics students from Wallahs Academy, a private Senior High School in Ho, demonstrated how cassava flour could be used to prepare banku and a variety of foods.

Series of film shows and inauguration of “Friends of the Museum” are some of the activities lined up to mark the celebration in the region.**
