Yikpabongo (N/R), Dec 18, GNA- The government is to build a museum at Yikpabongo in the West Mamprusi District to preserve artefacts and other cultural objects that abound in the area.
Professor George Hagan, Chairman of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), said this when he paid a visit to the historical sites that stretch through South Sissala, Builsa South, West Gonja and South West Mamprusi.
Prof. Hagan advised the people who live in the archaeological zone to preserve the buried artefacts to help attract tourists and development to the Northern Region.
He said the United States Information Services, the British High Commission and the UNESCO are interested in the area. “These artefacts are more valuable than gold and must therefore be preserved since the development of your areas will to a large extent, depend on these rare treasures.”
He warned that any person found digging the mounds under which the figurines are buried would be arrested and prosecuted. Prof Hagan therefore appealed to the chiefs of the areas to take responsibility of protecting the objects from illegal excavation.
