MTTU impounds motorbikes and 12 tricycles in Kumasi

The Ashanti Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has seized 31 motorbikes and 12 motorised tricycles popularly known as “Aboboya” in Kumasi Metropolis.

The operation launched by the MTTU to track motorists who flout traffic regulations comes on the back of reports that majority of pedestrian knock-downs in the Metropolis are caused by motorists who either drive in the middle lane or ignore the red light signal.

Briefing the media in Kumasi at the weekend, Superintendent Frank Abrokwah, Regional MTTU Commander said the reports came from the Accidents and Emergency Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The policemen were stationed at the various traffic lights and intersections, and were able to confiscate the vehicles within two hours of monitoring.

He said the tricycles were not licensed and were carrying passengers, which is illegal.

He said the culprit would be arraigned.

Supt Abrokwah advised the public not to patronise tricycles as a means of transport.
