Mrs. Kufuor Addresses UN Forum

A First Spouses Forum on Women’s Leadership for Children was held during the 27th Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Children, which ended last week.

The First Lady, Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, who addressed the forum said a National Partnership for Children has been launched to support children in need of health care and education.

She said the best investment any country can make is to ensure that children have a good start in life. That is why she is supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Women’s and Children Affairs “as well as other focussed organisation on promoting and protecting the rights of Ghanaian children”.

Mrs. Kufuor said the general the general level of awareness of children’s rights in Ghana is low because most citizens do not know the legal provisions that protect children. Many children in the country, especially those in the rural areas, are denied their rights and many children who should be in schools are not because they have been neglected.

She said the Commission on Human Rights and Administration Justice and the Department of Social Welfare are dealing with such cases of child neglect.
