MPs raise concerns over conditions of service

Lawmakers in Ghana’s Parliament have started raising issues about their conditions of service as stipulated under Article 71 of the 1992 Constitution barely three months to the expiration of their term.

According to them, with two months to the December 7 elections, bearing in mind that the 4th meeting of the House will last for only three weeks, their conditions of service are yet to be determined having worked for almost four years.

This, according to Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei, MP for Old Tafo, is worrying and must be addressed immediately.

Speaking on the floor Tuesday, he said he finds the situation difficult to comprehend.

“Mr. Speaker, the House is demanding for money to work hard. As we speak and you are aware, we don’t even know our conditions of service,” Mr. Osei said.

“So, I am asking, when is leadership going to brief us on the issue relating to Article 71 – so that we’ll be invigorated to work,” he added.

According to him, he does not believe that members will be motivated to work when nothing has been said regarding their conditions of service as parliament will go on recess in less than a month.

Members on both sides, he added are not so enthused about the situation and that leadership of the House must do something about the situation.
