MPs call for more support for NADMO

Accra, May 19, GNA – Members of Parliament on Friday urged the government to resource the National Disaster Mobilisation Organisation (NADMO) sufficiently to ensure that it discharged its duties creditably.

They also urged the organization to raise the level of response to disasters by responding promptly with relief items to victims of disasters. The members were contributing to a statement in parliament by Mr John Gyetuah, (NDC-Amenfi West) on the effects of a recent rainstorm in his constituency.

The MPs were unhappy that it was becoming a norm for NADMO to come in to do an assessment of a disaster situation without coming back with relief items for the victims.

Mr James Klutse Avedzi, (NDC-Ketu North) touched on a similar rainstorm in his area, saying, it could have dire consequences on rice production in the Aveyime area.

He said NADMO should intensify relief responses to victims of such occurrences and plan properly for future eventualities.

Mr Samson Ahi, (NDC-Juaboso) was critical of the Ministry of Interior, saying, Parliament was not being taken seriously because issues raised on the floor of the house on disasters had not been attended to. He questioned if NADMO was now working for its own interest or for the people.

Mr Stephen Balado-Manu, (NPP-Ahafo Ano South) was more concerned with the poor environmental practices of the citizenry, saying, tree planting had been relegated to the background and tree cutting for profit taking over to the detriment of the environment. Mr Bradford Adu, (NPP-Okere) said more resources should be channelled to NADMO for the organization to deliver. 19 May 06
