Mpakadan Presbyterian JSS tours GNA

Accra, April 2 GNA – Thirty-six students from Mpakadan Presbyterian Junior Secondary School (JSS) in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region on Friday paid a familiarisation visit to the Head Office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra. The students accompanied by their Headmaster and five teachers were at the GNA to learn at first hand some of the functions and operations of the Agency.

Speaking to the GNA, Mr Roland Alex Asare, Headmaster of the School, said the excursion was to serve as an incentive and also to encourage the youth in the area to enrol into the school. He said the tour was also to sensitise students from the area on the need to take their education seriously. He said most pupils in the area had dropped out of school because there were no role models in the area to give them the necessary encouragement to spur them on.

Mr Asare said because the students were from rural communities, there was the need to expose them to modern technology so as to help them to compete favourably with their counterparts from the urban areas. Senior Prefect of the School, Master Gasor Famous said the excursion was a very big eye-opener for some of them, since this was their first time of visiting the Agency. He said they had also learnt a lot about the various processes of the organisation adding that they would convince their friends back home to take their studies very seriously.

Nana Appau Duah, Acting General Manager of GNA, told the students that the Agency was set up on March 5 1957 by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, First President of Ghana, to promote national integration, over-all national development and to project the African Personality. Mr Boakye-Dankwa Boadi, Chief Editor, Home Desk, and Acting News Editor, took the students round the Editorial Section and explained the various functions of the organization to them.
