MP fires Parliament

Accra, June 15, GNA – A seemingly explosive situation was contained in Parliament on Wednesday when the House itself did not drag the situation into extremes to warrant the Speaker’s intervention although there were trading of words across the floor between the Majority and Minority.

It all started when during the correction of Votes and Proceedings, Mr Kofi Frimpong, NPP MP for Kwabre East drew the Speaker’s attention, saying that Mr Felix Twumasi-Appiah, NDC member for Sene’s name was always captured as being present in the House and that he was absent on Wednesday, but it was recorded that he was present.

The Minority Leader, Alban Bagbin as if stung by a bee shot up on point of order and vehemently countered the statement saying, “This act of mischief must stop in the House.”

He fired that the Member’s statement was coming out of malice and it should be withdrawn.

Mr Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, sensing danger intervened and said the House ought to find “a very credible system in marking the register in the House to avoid any discrepancies.”

When tempers flared, the Majority Leader, Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong prevailed on his members to put the matter to an end to let the House move ahead in its business for the day.

After the corrections in the Votes and Proceedings ended, the House took on the Minister of Health, Major Courage Quashigah (RTD) on the operations of some district hospitals.
